 From AVV Staff Meeting--CHAPLAIN-- 11 Jan 2026

One of my goals to complete before July, our nation's 250th anniversary, is "The Making Of America" which was published by the National Center for Constitutional Studies."

Psalm 46:1-10 (excerpts)

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear…Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, the earth melts. The LORD Almighty is with us; He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”

The danger we face in the United States isn’t Trend de Aragua…it isn’t Illegal aliens, it isn’t the huge deficit we have drawn ourselves into…oh, and it isn’t Gov-elect Spanberger. No…we can look at what has been repeated through the Biblical narrative…when the people abandoned God, He no longer protected them.

As we continue in our resolve to get more Virginia veterans engaged in the process of simply voting, let us do so with a peace in knowing that we are not in control…God is. Let us not forget to honor His power and majesty daily.  Our Founders sat down to invent a government that was designed to provide its people with freedom, prosperity, and peace. They did so under the umbrella of our Creator and operating with the consent of an intelligent and informed electorate.

Lord, as we enter 2026, help us to help our fellow vets become more prayerfully informed…help us to provide truths that encourage our nation's freedoms, prosperity, and peace…help us to always remember to exalt YOU, Lord above all!

AVV CHAPLAIN 23 Jun 2024 (a draft)

There are two widely different quotations I’ve been thinking of this past week, the first is from my Bible study, and the second, is from my time as a cadet at the Air Force Academy.

The first quote is from Ecclesiastes 3:1 and 7, which reads: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens…a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak.”

We as a nation, and certainly as Virginia Veterans are at a highly consequential time…a time to tear apart the destruction we’ve seen transpire…there can be no mending until that is done. WE have extended our time in silence for too long and it is time to speak…the way things are going, it may be our last opportunity. And we tear and speak by getting EVERY Veteran to vote!

The second quote is from the 1970 movie “Patton.” I first saw it with my classmates, while enduring the basic cadet physicality of Jack’s Valley in 1972. Fully realizing it was a George C. Scott “caricature,” however, it was, and remains, motivational…just listen:

            Now, an army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team.

            Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken out under fire. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do. Now, there's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We're not holding anything. Thirty years from now when you're sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee, and he asks you, "What did you do in the great World War II?" -- you won't have to say, "Well, I shoveled ---- in Louisiana.

We are indeed in a battle for our United States. AVV is a Team, an organization that understands time is running out, and that we must speak overwhelmingly through the ballot box. We are not interested in holding or squeaking by, but rather, by being decisive in our just cause. NOW is AVV time!

Lord, You have put us here in THIS time for us to do Your will now! Let us not waste the time we have. Give us the wisdom and magnify our time to accomplish good works, in Jesus’ name. AMEN.

So what time is it? AVV TIME! Every Veteran, Every Vote!

Newsletter submission for the May 2024 AVV Edition

AVV – Chaplain – 21 April 2024

 The current American situation, the response of many to Israel, in particular the “mob reaction,” calls to my mind “community organizing,” a phrase that became widely known in the mid-2000s. The person credited with defining that profession, Saul Alinsky, espoused that a successful organizer should be “an abrasive agent to rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; to fan latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expressions.” Now those “expressions” might lead to picketing, demonstrating, or in some other way, taking action. Within the preface of his book, “Rules for Radicals,” Alinsky dedicates his tome to “the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom—Lucifer.”

 What are we to remember? Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, verse 12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” We are to remember that, “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him.” John 3:17

What are we to do? According to 1 Thessalonians 5:22, “reject every kind of evil.” Even though the ultimate battle has already been won, we are to continue to fight, with confidence, because we know the end of the story.

Can we do anything else? PRAY, due to the spiritual battle we are in, VOTE and then get fellow Veterans to pray and to vote!

“Ask Not…” Article written for American Veterans Vote April Newsletter as the CHAPLAIN

 “Ask Not…”

Sometimes as problems or situations arise, I find myself failing to ask the right question, and when that happens, I may get an answer that doesn’t really solve my problem. Can anyone relate?

Let’s step back in history a bit. Moses has died and his successor, Joshua, is leading Israel into the promised land (Canaan), just as the Lord had promised. In doing so, Israel had miraculously crossed the Jordan river on foot, 40 years after their ancestors crossed the Red Sea, on foot with Moses. The promised land was inhabited, and the people there were enemies of Israel…but something happened as Joshua neared Jerico, in Canaan (Joshua 5:13-14):

Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?

Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.”

In this situation, Joshua, like we might today, inquired whether the man was for him or against him…but since Joshua was on a mission from the Lord, perhaps Joshua should have asked the man if he was for the Lord or not.

Similarly, during President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address on January 20, 1961, the new president posed the question, “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Not just a patriotic spirit but asking the right question.

Even today, the question is not so much, “is God for us,” but rather “are we for God?” Do we align ourselves with His will? As we go about our lives, do we really ponder the phrase “endowed by their Creator” as written in our nations’ Declaration of Independence? While going forward, encouraging other veterans to do their civic duty and vote, let us be mindful of asking the right questions, remembering Who is really in charge, as we pray for our nation.

United We Stand

 I had the extreme honor of providing the invocation prayer for the VETFEST (Hampton Roads Veteran & Patriot Appreciation Day) gathering in the Virginia Beach Convention Center, today, 16 October 2021.

As a member of the American Veterans Vote organization, this event was to encourage veterans to vote but more importantly to support the following candidates for Governor, LT. Governor and AG: Youngkin, Sears, and Miyares.

I thought I would include a transcript:

Psalm 133:1 says : "How good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity."

Well, unlike what the Psalmist said, there are others who seek to divide…we've all seen it...they are willfully creating chaos. Separating us by gender, race, rich, poor, young, old, vax, anti-vax, educator, parent. But look around! You all look beautiful…this is a GOOD and PLEASANT occasion! And we are UNITED!

You see, we remember our founding, and in our Constitution, our purpose was clearly stated, as "we the people, in order to form a more perfect Union." And we Declared that the root of that purpose as self-evident in our inalienable rights, endowed by our Creator, as "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." And that is what we are about!

So will you pray with me?  2 Chron 7:14 says, "if my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

Almighty and all-powerful Creator Lord, we come to You, confessing our sins, and asking You to heal our land. We are facing a mighty foe, but You Lord have the power to vanquish any foe, to right any wrong. So we humbly seek You and ask for healing. We ask that You look upon these candidates with favor, that You provide them with wisdom to lead, and that You impart right thinking on the citizens of Virginia who will elect our state leadership.  It is for all these things we pray, Amen and Amen.

“Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness…” Focusing on LIFE

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness…” Focusing on LIFE:

I was intrigued by recent Texas SB8 which bans abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy, and our nation’s reaction to that measure…

King David, the author of most of the Psalms wrote: “For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Of course, we know the “You” David spoke of was and is God.

The Unborn Victims of Violence Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-212) is also named as Laci and Conner’s Law after Laci and her unborn son, Conner were killed by her husband Scott Peterson. Scott was convicted of double homicide. That law recognizes an embryo or fetus in utero as a legal victim if they are injured or killed during the commission of any of over 60 listed federal crimes of violence. That law does not even require proof that the perpetrator knew the mother was pregnant!

The law does make the exception of abortion with the consent of the mother. But one may ask why? Who is speaking on behalf of the in utero victim?

Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) wrote: “Life is the immediate gift of God—a right inherent by nature in every individual; and it begins in contemplation of law as soon as an infant is able to stir in their mother’s womb.” In Europe, during the time of the Founders, the belief was that the parents gave life to the child, not The Lord…

As we continue in our efforts to form that "perfect union" we really need to reflect on our beginnings, and THE beginning, as well as THE end...

I have written short thoughts for church and other organizations over the years...I'm going to publish them here for those who may stop by.

Many Blessings!

1 Samuel 13-17

PATIENCE: Our timing, versus God's timing. It is interesting that He is so patient with us, while drawing us to Him in a process that takes a lifetime...but then, like Saul, when we pray to Him we expect our answer on our terms and our timing. Where is our patience? Where is our trust?

OBEDIENCE: Then, on the one hand, "I did it my way"-Saul is taught that his way must be in alignment with God's way to receive God's blessing. We also see that obeying is of greater value than offerings. At the other extreme, David understands that all he needs is God to fight the battle. Two approaches, one leading to failure and one to victory. And we must understand that victory is the Lord's.

Covid-19...we must turn to God in prayer! Whether a giant or a tiny "bug," it is only God who saves, and His timing is perfect.

Judges 10-12

In response to another's YOUVERSION post as we are going through the Bible in a Year together:

I don't know if it "wrong" to ask God for His assistance in whatever obstacles we face with a promise that we will obey whatever He chooses...isn't that what covenants are about? If...then. I need to think about that some more...they are good questions. What we need to be ready for is God's answer, which may not be as we expect. These verses with the 6 judges remind me of Peter asking Jesus how many times should he forgive someone who had sinned, to which Jesus replied: "70 times 7" (Matt18:21-22). Again we see the Israelites being saved, then over time forgetting their commitment to the LORD...He abandons them to their own devices, but when they turn back to Him, He saves them. God is truly the God who saves! He does so for me, 70 times 7. Listen to "I'm Alive" by Big Daddy Weave (hopefully below). The striking line for me is, "...but God..." after all the mistakes we/I make.

What are you voting for?

I saw a FACEBOOK post from "the other side," purporting "facts" concerning the 2020 election. For starters, it seems that again folks are still lamenting the 2016 election. I am no fan of the seemingly incessant Tweets, but the media only posts negative information. So, here are some positives for consideration. As I discover more, I will add.

My intent here is to "satisfy" my desire for political commentary without posting on FACEBOOK and other locations where I might cause others to stumble and also increase my blood pressure, due to the consistent lack of facts, but high emotion some people provide.

So here it goes:

1. You're not just voting for President.
2. You're voting for who replaces RBG on the Supreme Court.
3. You're voting to end the impeachment madness and inform Congress they need to do their jobs
4. You're voting for federal judges.
5. You're voting for the rule of law.
6. You're voting for the word  "legal." It should not be a difficult concept.
7. You're voting for people who didn't become millionaires when they were supposed to be serving.
8. You're voting for American small businesses who can now prosper due to reduced regulations.
9. You're voting for Red lines that mean Red lines and not avenues to surreptitiously funnel millions to our enemy.

  • VA Choice Act and VA Accountability Act, which expanded VA telehealth services, walk-in-clinics, and same-day urgent primary and mental health care.
17. You're voting for better healthcare:
  • Americans can comparison shop because healthcare providers must now disclose the cost of their services so that Americans can comparison shop and know how much less providers charge insurance companies;
  • Americans should never be blindsided by bills for medical services they never agreed to in advance;
  • Hospitals are required to post their standard charges for services, which include gross charges, the negotiated rates with insurers and the discounted price a hospital is willing to accept from a patient;
  • Allowing some drug imports from Canada, so that prescription prices would go down;

  • First Step Act, a criminal justice bill which enacted reforms that make our justice system fairer and helps former inmates successfully return to society;
  • Addressing inequities in sentencing laws that disproportionately harmed Black Americans and reformed mandatory minimums that created unfair outcomes;
  • Creating rehabilitative programs to inmates, helping them successfully rejoin society and not return to crime;

  6. Welfare reform - Requiring able-bodied adults who don’t have children to work or look for work if they’re on welfare.
  7. You're are voting for our allies to contribute more for global defense and not rely as heavily on the US, thus putting more dollars to work for the US back home.

No human is perfect. One more time…no human is perfect, so "purity tests" will not work. Examine the policies of all who would like your vote in their native form, not as "pseudo academics," "biased media," "entertainment industry," and others would have you understand. Examine policies accomplished and policies promised.

OFFERING DEVOTION - 13 Jan 2019

OFFERING DEVOTION
13 JAN 2019

As we go to God before this offering, may we agree that an offering is a gift? And further, let us try to remember that WHAT WE DO WITH WHAT GOD PROVIDES MATTERS!
Throughout the Bible we read stories of what people did or did not do with what God provided, but even more than that, we read about God’s perfect and unceasing ability to give. We see that God knows exactly what He is asking of us, because He demonstrated perfect giving first, just as He demonstrates perfect love.
Throughout the Bible we read that God “gave…” For example, in the Old Testament He gave the Israelites manna to eat…
In the New Testament, Romans 8:3 says, “For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering.”
The Bible says in Ephesians 5:25 that “Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.”
So, as we turn to this time of offering, let us prayerfully consider that WHAT WE DO WITH WHAT GOD PROVIDES MATTERS, and God loves His church so much that He gave…what can I give…what can we give to His church?

Father God, You gave so much, and with these offerings, we give back to You what is Yours, for Your kingdom. We know that You will put these gifts to mighty work for Your kingdom, and we thank You, Father for allowing us to participate in what You are doing in this manner. It is in the most precious name of Jesus we pray these things…AMEN!
